sifted words — a lil’ nursery tour
I needed a little breathing time/downtime earlier this week after the whirlwind that was the release of my new eCookbook, so I decided to take that downtime to not make a recipe and instead snap some photos of my upcoming babe’s nursery to share with you. I hope you don’t mind! Slash welcome to my home, sort of? Maybe I’ll do a full house tour once I do the dishes. For now, bebe’s room. Focus.
I’ll start by addressing two things: 1) This is the teeniest room in our house — our storage space in the basement is bigger than this room — so it was a bit of an ordeal getting good angles/photos of the whole thing. So bear with me on the janky photography, kthanks. 2) The color on the walls is not gray nor blue (nor pink nor brown), but instead a purple that apparently cannot get its act together on the whole staying-the-same-shade in photographyville. The wall color is actually Heirloom Orchid, if you want to know what it looks like in real life.
Mmmmk, now that we have THAT out of the way: To the nursery we go!
The photo above is what you see when you first walk into the room. Look, that’s where I sleep! JOKES. That’s where baby will sleep! I sometimes imagine her in the crib (it’s the Sundvik from IKEA) and think about how teeny-tiny she will be in this giant bed. It’s like a king size bed for a baby. So yeah, I’m kind of jealous.
Oh, and every little girl’s room needs twinkle lights, methinks, so we put those in the corner to use as a night light for those late night/early morning hours we’ll be spending in there (goodbye, beautiful sleep).
Above her bed is a mirror window I got from a garage sale an eon ago and a cardboard “A” I bought from JoAnn Fabric (LOVE that store — in my other life, I am a crafty old grandma) and painted gold. Oh — the “A” stands for Avery, which is what we are naming our daughter, in case you didn’t see it on the Instagram!
To reiterate my crafty old grandma ways, I also constructed the mobile from this DIY. OBVIOUSLY I am not a craft blogger, as my mobile does not look nearly as neat as the one in the original post — but if you squint it looks mostly OK.
And yes, yes I do sing “Purple Rain” to myself every time I see the mobile. The irony is not lost on me.
Onward! This is the rocking chair (Poang from IKEA)/nursing chair/chair where Stephanie plans to watch re-runs of “Gilmore Girls” and drink wine while rocking Avery to sleep (OK OK, no on the wine… maybe sometimes sangria). The pillow on it is made from heavenly angel feathers, I think — it’s SO SOFT. And from Pier 1 Imports. (The rug is from IKEA.)
The wall across from the crib is a chalkboard wall — for extra fun! Well, fun for adults now, fun for Avery when she is old enough to draw. My naive sense of parenthood leads me to believe that she will know to draw on this wall and ONLY THIS WALL, forever and ever. Heh.
And on the wall across from the window/rocking chair sitch is the changing table/dresser (guess where from?? IKEA). I didn’t intend to do a deer/nature theme on the wall there, but it happened and I like it. The “Oh My Deer” print is from Lulu & Georgia; the cardboard deer head is from Cardboard Safari (via Etsy) and the butterfly shadow box is from… oh my goodness, get ready… IKEA. And the gold frame holds our very first photo of Avery. I can’t get over the cuteness that is her little fist above her head, like she was waving to us (hi, baby! See you soon! Please stop kicking Mommy in the ribs!).
Side note: How neato are these organizer boxes for the dresser? They were in the display version of the dresser at IKEA and we fell hook, line and sinker for the product placement. But I love them because they compartmentalize all the miniature clothes that would otherwise get lost in the grand canyon that is the dresser drawer.
We think this little nook in the wall used to be a window before they built on an addition to the house? In any case, it has turned into a nifty bookshelf. I also have naive notions that Avery will not pull down every one of these books within her reach and that they will stay as perfectly organized as they are now until she outgrows them.
Oh yes — the rocking horse! It was Elliott’s when he was a wee lad so it’s ANCIENT (he’s six months older than me so I can say that). His grandfather made it for him so it has sweet sentimental value — and I love that it is being passed down to our wee one.
Whew! I think that about covers it. I hope I didn’t bore you to death with a million words and pictures about a room smaller than a walk-in closet, but there you have it. In about 10 days, this room will no longer be empty but finally have a little baby girl in it. I can’t wait.
P.S. Raise your hand if you still have Prince stuck in your head! Puuuurple rain, puuuurple raiiinnnn…
Ahhhh adorable!! Seriously I am jealous of Avery already and her fabulous room 🙂
Love the purple! And now I have Purple Rain in my head 🙂 This room is so adorable, I can’t wait for Avery to arrive! xoxo
It’s absolutely adorable..
Great job..so many cute special touches.
Aww this is all so pretty and cute. Avery is such a lucky little lady. I’m so excited for you to be a mom!
Also, that book nook is everything and while I’m ions of years away from having a baby I’m stealing that idea. Also, SO PUMPED you have Madeline on her shelf! I’d recommend getting some Mary Poppins and Amelia Bedelia up in there. 🙂
The baby’s room is adorable! You did such a good job using the small space. I also love that you added the chalkboard wall, so much fun.
Your baby’s room is very sweet. Love the chalkboard wall idea! In about ten days you are in for a whole new adventure – Enjoy every moment, you won’t believe how quickly they grow up. 🙂
Cute! I’m so excited for your baby girl to make her arrival! I’m due in August, and we haven’t even started on the nursery (aside from when we painted the room two years ago, we knew it would be a nursery someday, so we don’t have to repaint now). Please tell me I’m not behind, even though I’ll be 6 months next week!
Taylor — Haha, thanks dear! I’m pretty jealous of her, too. 😉
Lisa — Right? Once it’s stuck in my head, it never gets out. 😉
Monique — Thank you so much!
Marissa — Mary Poppins and Amelia Bedelia, AGREED. 🙂
Lauren — Thanks, friend! Can’t wait to see what you end up doing for your little bean. 🙂
Misha — I know; I’m so excited and terrified for the change all at the same time. Going to do my best to enjoy every moment, even now, because it does fly by!
Ashley — You have PLENTY of time. 🙂 We decorated around six months and it’s just been sitting there now, which is only making time go by more slowly, ha. Take your time and enjoy it — it’s so much fun to see it all come together (and congrats, by the way!!).
This is just soooo adorable.. love the deer print on the wall.. and you can’t go wrong with Dr. Seuss, my kids love those books.
Amazing, magazine-worthy, incredibly beautiful room for your beautiful baby to enjoy — and you too! Great job, Stephanie!
As much as I enjoy your recipes, I loved this post even more! The anticipation and excitement of a new baby’s room is beyond words and your little one looks like she will be welcomed with so much love.
Oh my goodness. This is the cutest little nursery – I love the color and everything, so soothing. This makes me want to be pregnant just so I can decorate a nursery, put together cute Ikea furniture (my favorite!), and organize little baby clothes into those dresser drawers. I also totally approve of your wall decorations. And that built in bookshelf! Ah! I’m dying.
I LOVE the colors you choose! It’s so pretty! And that deer print – I may need to buy one of those for myself! lol
OMG! Such a fabulously cute room! I love it!
So sweet, Steph! I just LOVE the idea of those dresser compartment boxes. I might need to get those for my own mess of a bureau!!
Erika — Thanks, friend! I’m weirdly excited to read those Dr. Seuss books to my kid, haha. 🙂
Susan — Thank you so much! 🙂
Holly — Thank you so much! I can’t wait to make so many fond memories in that room. 🙂
Sara — Thank you! It was pretty fun putting everything together (well, minus the IKEA furniture ;)).
Ashley — Do it! I love the print and wanted to buy pretty much everything else that store sells on their site (so be prepared ;)).
Grace — Thank you so much!
Meg — Seriously, I did not buy enough of them. They make me want to organize EVERYTHING. 😉
OMG! I should be working but I couldn’t help read your blog! I am so excited and cannot wait to be up there next week. Where is the picture of your cute little belly? Hmmmmm. Me thinks you should show that off too because you really do look adorable. I do, however, hope you make some yummy stuff soon because I now have a hankering for lemon crumb loaf with vanilla almond chai latte!
LOVE it! Such a perfect, pretty room. The deer wall is my favorite!
everything about this, just perfect. i love the little dear “oh my dear” print! so excited for you – and congrats again on the book!
Oh my goodness what a cute room! Avery is one lucky little girl! I love chalkboard wall and the rocking horse is so sweet. You did a fab job!
ADORABLE!!! You could have a second career as a home decorator m’dear
xo
Ohmygosh love love love love!!! This is the sweetest room Stephanie! I’m so in love with the window turned bookshelf and the deer motifs! Everything is just perfect!
Too cute, love the wall color!
I’ve been stalking you and your cooking for weeks, old friend. Seemed like I should say a more formal Hello, now that I’m snooping on your adorable nursery. So excited for you 🙂 lots of love, Alex
Mom — I sent you a pic last night, silly. 😉 And when you’re here we can eat all the lemon crumb loaf and drink all the vanilla almond chai lattes your heart desires!
Marie — Thanks, lady!
Amanda — Thanks! I think that print was the first thing I bought for the room, I loved it so. 🙂
Jessica — Thank you, friend!
Erin — Oh thank you, dear! Though I did work on this room a lot more than any other room in the house, so…. it’s an illusion. 😉
Nicole — Thank you, friend!
Laura — Thank you! I think it was the first time we painted a room and actually liked the first color we chose — WIN. 🙂
Alex — Oh hi, friend! So good to hear from you. Hope you’re well! xo
I love it! That mobile is darn cute. My BFF has the same crib and dresser for her little one, and I have plans to acquire them as well. I can’t wait to see pics of your sweet girl!
This is the cutest nursery ever!! All the little details perfectly go together. I love the chalkboard wall. Baby Avery is going to love it 🙂
Love the purple! Such an adorable nursery, Stephanie!
This is so awesome! The nursery is just lovely and your mobile ROCKS!
Cindy — They’re super affordable but still cute… highly recommend!
Zainab — Thank you so much, my dear!
Jessica — Thanks, friend!
Kerry — Oh, thank you about the mobile! Just don’t look too closely. 😉
I spy a little something from Aunt Nattie in there!!! (that’s me!!!!!!!!!!) AND all of the clothes = adorbs. Loving the chalkboard wall 🙂 <3
The room looks adorable and you guys seem so ready!!
Awww! This room is so perfect for a sweet little baby girl. I love every inch of it! Especially the rocking horse. And ps- you won’t believe how fast she grows out of that crib. Seriously, don’t blink! Good luck, Stephanie. You’ll be in my thoughts/prayers over the next few weeks 😉
Natalie — Yes ma’am! Can’t wait for her to wear it! 🙂
Megan — SO ready. Well, as ready as we’ll ever be. 🙂 Thanks!
Allie — Thank you so much! I’ll do my best not to blink. 😉
Oh my goodness! I love it! Such a sweet room for Bebe Avery! How I miss those days when my sweet kids were that small … time goes so fast.
I also love how optimistic you are about about drawing on the walls and not pulling down books! 🙂 Keep us posted on that!
PS – ‘Are You My Mother?’ is one of my all-time fave books. I remember my mom reading that and ‘The Giving Tree’ to me. I’ve loved sharing my copies from my childhood with my kiddos!
What a beautiful room! I love everything that you’ve done, the purple wall and the chalk board? That’s a fantastic idea. We purchased all of our nursery furniture from Ikea too, great style and even greater price!! Very excited for you!
Can I come live here too? Too much?
Love the simplicity of this nursery! The color is gorgeous and love the mobile. Everything is so pretty, Stephanie!
It’s adorable!! Love all the books and those cute shelves. So exciting!
What a lovely and peaceful space! That spotty rug is perfect too.
It’s so beauuuutiful! I love it all–and I laughed out loud at your Ikea comments (I’m pretty sure if I described the contents of my apartment, it would go the same way).
Also. Jealous of those drawer organizers–I feel like I need those in my life.
What a great room decorator you are! Come decorate my room? 😉 I love everything about this – especially the chalkboard wall! Thanks for taking the breather to show us baby’s dwelling!
Oh I love your nursery. The one thing I wish we would have done before our little guy arrived was finish our nursery. We are a month in from him being here and all we’ve had time to do is hang up 1 thing on the wall! Oh and great idea to have the lights for late night feedings. We have half done LEd lighting that is recessed in our crown moulding and I use it every night! You’ll Also live in that rocker! I need to get back to ikea for the drawer organizers! Congrats and good luck–you’ll never really be prepared for the sleepless nights.
Gretchen — The Giving Tree is one of the best books, and it’s on the shelf too! And ha, I’ll keep you posted on the wall drawing situation… I don’t have high hopes. 😉
Maria — Thanks so much! IKEA is the best. 😉
Stephie — You are most welcome. Though I can’t promise it won’t be awkward.
Ashley — Thank you, love!
Tieghan — Thanks, dear!
Kathryn — Thanks, lady! I do love the spotty rug. 🙂
Laura — Haha, the rest of our house is a similar story. IKEA gets us every time. 😉
Julia — Thank ya, friend!
Katie — Oooh, I like the sound of those recessed LED lights! And I know… I’m dreading the lack of sleep already (but it’s all worth it, right? :)).
So pretty! So sweet! Just like Avery 🙂
I love what you’ve done with her room! I was recently discussing with a friend how I am not into commercial themes for nurseries. This is gorgeous. I especially love the rug and the paint color.
Awww, Steph! It’s beautiful! So classy, simple and perfect for your little Avery. I love the chalkboard wall, and that built-in bookshelf (mine is also covered in Seuss). I’m so excited for you!
Wow, incredible job! I love the bookshelf!! I see some of my favorite reads up there… 😉
DessertForTwo — Just like YOU. <3
Amanda — I just couldn’t decide on a theme so I’m glad the hodgepodge turned out well. 🙂 Thanks!
Georgia — Thanks, lady! Right back at ya! 🙂
Todd — Only the best for the bebe. 😉 Thanks!
Awww! I love it! Hats off to you crafting your own mobile instead of paying an insane amount of money for something off Etsy!!! I love the little reading nook. And I am so jealous that you have that cardboard deer head. Mike would not allow me to put anything of the sort in Andy’s room. He is no fun! I cannot wait until Aver is here ! Eeeeeeee!
Aaw Avery’s room is absolutely adorable! So so precious – I love everything about it especially all the personal little touches you added and I know she will too 🙂 Hope you get some rest these last few days and so excited for you and your sweet precious princess 🙂
So cute…but please be careful about hanging heavy or hard things over the crib. That mirror makes me nervous. Also little hands like to grab…the electrical lights hanging next to the crib… I hate being so negative but I’m a mom with 2 grown children…been there…done that. The room is beautiful…your baby will be too!
Sue — You and my mom both have pointed out these things; thank you. 🙂 We are definitely going to plan accordingly when she’s old enough to grab things!

i am way late to the party, but I saw the photo of the dresser drawer on Pinterest and just had to click through. We use those same boxes in the same dresser for our daughter. The setup is so perfect for a changing table! Love this cute little room. Hope you and your sweet little lady are doing well!

I found a picture of your dresser through Pinterest and I absolutely LOVE the drawer organizers! I cannot seem to find them on Ikea online – do you know the series/line they are in? I thought maybe Skubb but they don’t seem to have that pretty pattern!
Katie — Oh man, I wish I could remember the name of them but I don’t! And I can’t find them online, either. So sorry!
