I didn’t have eggs or butter on hand, so this was a perfect save. I used extra-ripe bananas and folded in the chocolate chips at the very end because sometimes I have an overmixing problem. It baked up with a great dome and held together better than some non-vegan recipes out there! My book club loved it! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ingredients & Substitutions
Here are the main ingredients and substitutions for this vegan banana bread recipe. Scroll down to the recipe card at the bottom for the full ingredients list and instructions.
First off, choose brown spotted bananas. Overripe bananas contain more natural sweetness. This yields the classic banana bread flavor!
A little bit of vegan milk adds moisture. Feel free to use oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, cashew milk, or macadamia nut milk.
Melted coconut oil is the baking fat. It adds moisture. Use refined coconut oil for a neutral flavor. Unrefined coconut oil has a slight coconut flavor.
A teaspoon of vanilla adds some tasty homemade flavor.
Light brown sugar sweetens this quick bread. If needed, replace it with white sugar. If you’d like to use maple syrup, check out my vegan oat flour banana bread!
All-purpose flour thickens the batter and adds substance. Use gluten-free flour to make gluten-free vegan banana bread.
Baking soda helps to leaven the bread.
Add in a pinch of sea salt for added flavor. In addition, it helps balance out the sweetness of the bread.
Lastly, fold in vegan chocolate chips to the batter. Alternatives include chopped chocolate, walnuts, pecans, dried cranberries, or raisins.

Variations
Here are some ways to switch up the flavors of this vegan banana bread.
Use another kind of chocolate chips. Dark, semisweet and vegan white chocolate chips can be used.
Add in some chopped up vegan chocolate bars. This creates pools of chocolate!
For extra flavor, add in a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg. This balances out the chocolate well.
Add some walnuts or pecans to the batter. Or, top the loaf with chopped nuts.
Add a streusel topping before baking.
Replace chocolate chips with dried cranberries or blueberries.
Allow this vegan banana bread to fully cool. Then, slice and serve.
Taste & Texture
This vegan banana bread tastes very similar to classic banana bread. The sweetness from the bananas is the biggest flavor. Although this dairy free version does not contain butter, it still has a warm and cozy flavor.
This banana bread is moist and slightly dense. The absence of eggs makes it less cake like and more dense. Overall, the bread is soft and fluffy, with a slight density.
Tips & Tricks
Choose bananas that are brown speckled. They contribute a delicious natural sweetness.
Do not overmix the batter. This creates a dense loaf of bread.
Do not bake too long. Once a toothpick inserted comes out with only moist crumbs, remove pan from the oven.
Top the bread with a handful of chocolate chips before baking. This is my favorite part!
